The “Die Raupe” project reimagines the Freizeitzentrum Landauer as a key cultural, recreational, and sports hub for Riehen, making it more accessible, flexible, and adaptable to evolving visitor needs. Named after its zoomorphic side elevations, “Die Raupe” respects the existing triangular shed’s modest urban presence while reinterpreting it in a contemporary yet timeless way. The project renovates and extends the facilities by adding an inclined roof to each building, seamlessly integrating them with the adjacent park.

The Kindergarten and Freizeitzentrum share a common architectural language, unified by a wooden structural system that firmly connects with the ground. Drawing from 1970s sports facilities and early 20th-century Notkirche designs, the project refreshes and expands this typology into playful forms that blend harmoniously with the landscape.

A crucial element of the design is the landscape itself, which unifies the three buildings while ensuring smooth transitions between soft and hard surfaces, inspired by the site’s geological history. Enhancing circulation, a pedestrian promenade along the southern façade connects interior and exterior spaces, creating a continuous flow. By preserving the original structure’s integrity while introducing functional and aesthetic updates, “Die Raupe” keeps the Freizeitzentrum a dynamic and welcoming community space.
